Don Carlson

Don says:
“Growing up, my dad was always working on engines and I soon picked up his passion for everything mechanical.
He flew model planes as a young man and got my brother and I into that sport. I started flying radio controlled
plans and when I started doing aerobatics, I'd put a plane through a maneuver and wonder, "what does that feel like?".
I was flying r/c planes at the old Franklin Wilkins airport and one of the pilots made the comment that for the money
I had in one of my r/c planes, I could be a pilot. That woke me up to the fact that I could learn to fly and find out
what all of that stuff felt like. On my first lesson, the feeling from being at the controls had me hooked. 3 hours after
getting my PPL, my instructor (Johnny Williams) and I flew to Summerville and we each took an introductory aerobatic lesson.
It was awesome to see and feel a small sample of what I'd been putting those model planes through, even if it did turn me green.”
Don Carlson started flying in May, 1991. He is an instrument rated private pilot with 10 hours of aerobatic training and one static-line parachute
jump. Don owns and flies a beautiful 1975 Grumman Tiger. He is involved in the EAA Young Eagles Program and is PVE’s AOPA Airport Support
Network volunteer.
